Your favorite warrior tribe west of the Mississippi

My pick the Apache and black foot.

Some tribes were more war-like than others and some were more peaceful.

I was not sure how to do a poll so but I have been interested the Apache and their fighting skills. I live in what use to be their territory and two days ago I found a tiny glass arrow head, most likely used for small birds. It could have been Hopi but most likely Apache, who knows.

They were incredible warriors and if you know anything about the Cochise stronghold they stood against the US Army for quite a while. I need to reread this story but it is only an hour, from me, in the Dragoon Mountains.
(I will look up a link for this later)

The black foot Indians were also known for their ferocity and they forced the more peaceful Flathead Salish to move a couple of mountains ranges away to escape them. The early pioneers totally avoided Blackfoot territory.

My great step-grandfather was half Black foot and I live in their former territory in Montana as well.

I use to live in Walla Walla, WA which is not far from the Wallowa Valley, Oregon where the Nez Perce use to live until the U.S. government and settlers forced them out. It is really beautiful there with the Wallowa Mountians in the background and recently the Nez Perz purchased 10,000 acres there. I have hiked and backpacked all over the Wallowa Mtns or Eaglecap wilderness area- Wallowa whitman National Forest.

I have always admired the Modoc in N. California for their stand against the U.S. army.

The Comanche were a tough breed of warriors- I think mostly Texas

Some of the tribes of British Columbia and the Northwest Coast were pretty formidable.

You mean the Salish tribes - yes that is so true! I lived in Olympia, WA while going to college. Their territory stretched from N. California to S. BC

They had incredible canoes made with planked wood and they even wore wooden armor until the bullet came along- LOL :p I once saw a painting of some Salish warriors in a canoe and one was standing up with a head in his hand. They were head hunters, proof of battle I suppose. No digital cameras then- LOL

Their long houses were interesting also but for as advanced as they were they did not have clay pottery, as far as I know. I have been to several museums where they had artifacts from these tribes. The long house at my old college was made traditionally but it has electricity. :)

The Modoc never get enough attention, but they deserve it for sure. A little on the Modoc War. http://www.militarymuseum.org/Modoc1.html

Some of them still are, never signed treaties never surrendered rights to their ancestral territories.
