Re: Juan Peron of Argentina- Success or failure?

David, I re-read your comment about Argentina.

Argentine politics, and the politics of the more advanced states in South America, are complicated. I don't pretend to understand all the nuances, but at least until after the Dirty Wars of the 70s and 80s, it is pretty clear that politics almost always benefitted established interests rather than "popular" ones.

Juan Peron had to be an opportunist, shifting back and forth between left and right wings. Perhaps a testament to what his real thinking was, however, is that his best buddies politically were Alfredo Stroessner and Franco.

I agree, Pikeshot. I've never understood Argentine politics. It seems to me they're more complicated than other countries in the region. One of my latina friends told me it's all about corruption: people vote for the candidate they think will steal less.
