Eva Peron: Saint or Slut?

Eva Duarte was born out of wedlock and was the youngest of five children. Growing up, Eva experienced what it meant to be part of the lower classes in Argentinian society. She attempted to change this by moving to Buenos Aires and trying her luck as an actress. This attempt met with partial success.

According to legend, Eva met Juan Peron at a benefit function for earthquake victims and greeted him with the words "Thank you for existing." Juan was a colonel in the Argentinian militaryband had justva few weeks earlier taken part in a coup to overthrow the government. Juan was placed in charge of labor relations, a relatively lacklustre job that was to see him become champion of the workers and elected to the Presidency with Eva at his side. It is important to note that Eva was Juan's mistress before they married.

During Juan's term as president, he oversaw the creation of a social welfare system spearheaded by his wife Eva, now known as Evita by the populace that adored her. Medical services were made available to the poor in the cities and the countryside via a train carrying medical staff, sanitation issues in the slums were addressed and improved, Eva even set up a home for girls who came to the city and found themselves penniless. This was financed by Juan's government as well as Eva's foundation which was funded by donations. These donations often came in the form of workers wages who were obliged to donate part of it or be roughed up for refusing.

Eva wasn't without her flaws, during a tour of Europe to promote Argentina, Eva purchased a wardrobe's worth of Christian Dior clothing. Eva and Juan are thought to have helped Nazi war criminals escape Europe to Argentina in return for some of the Nazi party's fortune.

After her death from uterine cancer, the outpouring of grief rivaled that seen after the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the death of Princess Diana.

Why then, if Evita was loved so much is there so much controversy surrounding her? Is it because if her speculated links with Fascism and Nazism or because she was changing Argentinian society for the better, angering the aristocratic landholders that dominated the Argentinian countryside?

Saint or Slut

I can't think of anything more saintly to men than a slut.

Good one. From what I know about her, I would say that it is difficult to chose between these two very particular terms.

Are those the two options available for female contenders in the political arena?

Well she was actually both.
Before Peron she had other coronels lovers, she was a fortune hunter, but when Peronism prevailed in Argentina she did help the poor, thinking probably of who she was before she became the president's wife.
Now Peronism started as a left wing political movement but it ended up as a right wing party eventually.
Peron was acting like a dictator even though he was elected democratically by the people three times. What one can say for both of them was that they did not tolerate opposition to their rule.

I use those options because that was exactly what my lecturer named the lecture on her

What do you think of those designations overall though? Can she not be both? I think JFK would be a good male example of being extremely promiscious and a great statesman.

Eva Peron was perhaps a slut, although I prefer the term 'entrepeneur', but no saint.

In a phrase 'a ruthless opportunist'.She had more in common with Imelda Marcos than Joan D'arc.

Eva had the great good fortune to die before she could do any serious damage to her country and before people got her number. So she became "Santa Evita' to many Argentines. The Catholic church politely declined requests to seriously consider her canonisation.

Perhaps I should have been clearer, what I was really asking was whether Eva did these things because she felt a duty towards the Argentinian people or was she the self indulgent trophy wife that some critics make her out to be?
