CSS Virginia vs USS Monitor - 8th March 1862

This is the famous battle between the Union and Confederates first ironclad warships, which took place in Virginia and lasted for about 3 hours with neither ship damaging the other crucially until they broke off.

This, although it was a draw, was still a first, and crucial battle in world naval history.
Does anyone know who broke away first ?

Any comments about this remarkable battle ?

They fought to mutual exhaustion, IIRC.

One interesting fact, the result of the "Peacemaker" explosion had limited the amount of powder Monitor could load into her guns to 50% of intended. The problem was the Peacemaker was not the gun that exploded, it was a copy done by a rival and was poorly cast. The properly cast Peacemakers could handle the charge quite well, as we found out later.

If Monitor had fired full charges she would have knocked Virginia to kindling in a few hours.

I'm just wondering if they drifted away, spent,or if one side decided to move away first.
I guess it's the 1st option otherwise the side that moved away would have been classified as retreating and losing the battle in historical notes.

It's a wonder everyone in both crews didn't go permanently deaf from the cannon roar inside those metal hulls.

"Artilleryman's disease" was listed as a disability eligible for a partial pension.
