Patton,
Thank you very much for your help!
Could you please explain what is "environmental technician"? I've never heard of it and couldn't find the translation.

P.S. The research is still on stream, so we are looking forward to more replies Thanks.

It's basically someone who works with industry and property developers to ensure the property is in compliance with federal and state government environmental regulations. I'd collect samples or monitor water discharge, soil, paint; run some tests on the sample, then drive the sample to a lab where they would do more tests.

I feel obligated to respond because I live in St. Louis, Missouri. The city is known as "The Gateway to the West" because many 19th-century pioneers traveled through St. Louis while on their journey to settling in regions of the western US. The city has a large monument - an arch - on the riverfront of the Mississippi River to commemorate its historic past as a thoroughfare for persons and families migrating west.

Families seeking parcels of land on which to live and farm in western US territories. "Pioneer" also brings to mind persons and families who settled in territories east of the Mississippi River such as in Kentucky and Indiana which, in early US history, were considered western territories.

No. Though the populating of the US west of the Mississippi involved a vast migration or movement of peoples, I suppose they were just ordinary people looking for a place to settle down, live their lives, raise families, etc. (Although it seems the Mormons were forced to migrate west, as their presence in Illinois was unacceptable to the communites there.)

May I add one more thing? This 19th-century era of immigration to territories in the western US always brings to my mind the famous quote by the newspaper editor Horace Greeley: "Head west, young man!" His advice to young men of the time who sought to live successful lives was to go west.

Fillmore x 1856, Thank you so much!

This forum is the only one on which I still get new replies (I started this questionnaire on several forums and after 3-5 days there were no more answers. And we need at least 100 to be objective!!!)

beetle, these words brought one question to my mind. Do you consider the first people coming to the New World (1607, 1620) as Pioneers??? Or are "pioneers" only people migrating to the West in 19th century? And weren't there any explorer in the 17-18 centuries???
