Warren G. Harding

Warren G. Harding was the 29th president of the United States. Best remembered for a few things:

1) Perhaps most famously, he is known for numerous scandals throughtout his presidency. Teapot dome scandal among others.

2) Another president to die while in office, yet another victim of the supposed (and creepy) Curse of Tippecanoe. Rumoured to have been murdered, via food poisoning. Succeeded by vice president Calvin Coolidge.

3) The election of 1920 was the first to be conducted under the 19th amendment, allowing women to vote.

4) Nominated ex-president William Taft to be Chief Justice.

5) President while Prohibition was in full swing. Also president when the Soviet Union was proclaimed in 1922.

Due to the various scandals that plagued his presidency, he is regarded as one of the worst presidents of all-time.

I can see I'm going to have to read up on the man, seeing that I have not heard of him before now.

"Return to normalcy!"

It has been frequently noted that when women got the vote the worst president was elected.

Under the old convention system, Harding was a "dark horse" who was chosen as a compromise candidate.

A favorite comment about Harding, from Alice Longworth, daughter of Theodore Roosevelt:

"Mr. Harding isn't a bad man. He is just a slob."
