How did Hawaii become a State?

Hawaii is waay off the reach of the Continental United States, yet at present, it is a US state.

Why ? How did Americans from the mainland reach Hawaii in the first place? Why did they turn it into a state?

What interest would they have anyways ?
And what did they do to the natives?

I assume there was some sort of "Kingdom of Hawaii" at the time ?

Economical interests. When the queen of hawaii tried to push back the influence of US sugar barons, they revolted and installed a republik in 1894. Four years later hawaii was annexed.

But that they made an apology is quite great. It was Clinton, I believe.

Obama would have been a German Chancellor perhaps, as Germany tried to acquire Hawaii before the U.S. got its hands on it.

The only thing I can contribute is that Hawaii has a Union (uk) flag on it's state flag. So at some point it was probably a British possession, or really likes football

When American planters began sugar cane, and other goods, production in the late 1870s to early 1880s (I think) the world was beginning a naval/colonial race. One of the instigators of this race was Germany. Germany, although powerful, wanted colonies. Not just worthless colonies like Namibia or those pitiful rocks that they owned in the Pacific, but strategic and profitable colonies like Hawaii and the Congo. In fact Kaiser Wilhelm II even considered DoWing the US to gain control of those colonies that the US owned i.e. Hawaii, the Philippines, etc. Robert Conroy wrote a book on it. It's called 1901.

Anyways the Naval command staff saw the value of Hawaii as an outpost/refueling station/power projector for the US and her Navy. The Japanese and British saw this as well. The British actually occupied Hawaii, or the Sandwich Islands, in 1843.

That's new for me. I know, that there were relations with Prussia, so if i remember correct, the national anthem of hawaii was written by a german, Berger. can you tell the story?
