It seems to me that the Dutch, along with the Spanish and Portugese tended to view exploration first and foremost as a commercial venture. If there was a readily exploitable resource they would set up a colony and try to get hold of it, if not they weren't interested and moved on.

Although the British and the French did this as well they were also more interested in exploration for its own sake and sent out scientific as well as commercial expeditions.

Of course everybody was primarily motivated by money, I would say the Spanish definitely had a large religious motivation as well.
