For some reason when I think of a movie (cinema) theater, I use -er, and with a show I think theatre.
I do the same things. A theater is a place for movies, while a theatre is a place for orchestras, operas, ballets etc.

I'm not even American but if I write English I do it in an American way of spelling. It's a. easier, and b. it's just looks better.
