No, no. Just practical matter - for an industrial and corporative city, it is the best way to function. USA is a huge country, it became huge even in the end f the 19-th centuries, so it was much easier to arrange the new big cities by skyscrapers. It is practical, convinient, chepest way and after that happened a symbol of the great industrialism and civilization.

I thing the copycats from the 20-th century build skyscrapers, when they are not necessary, but in a countries like Japan or US, China, HonkKong etc. it is a matter of simple, clear necessity.

If there is any truth to this theory one could look at the situation in Hong Kong from the 1930s to 1980s
In 1935 the 19th century gentleman' club-style Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Building was replaced with the Colony's first skyscraper ( see below). It was built on a plot right next to the (Beijing owned) Bank of China Building.
The Bank of China then built a skycraper right next door that was one story higher.
HKSB then added a terrace on their top floor , slightly overshadowing the Chinese. The Bank of China then added a column on their building topped by a flagpole. The years until the outbreak of WW2 then saw a battle of the flagpoles, each putting upo a taller one than the people next door.
In 1985 HKSB built then then, most expensive building in the world, massively dwarfing the nondescript Bank of China building next door ( see image 2--the Bank of China Building is the piddly pile on the left).
When China retaliated in 1988 they built what was for a short time the tallest building in Asia-- a good case of "look how big mine is!"

You didn't start a war. There is no animosity here.

Yes you can. Just to name a few, Japan and the UAE have created islands where before there was only oceanwater. Japan turned there island into an airport. UAE made housing communities on there islands which are shaped into certain figures.

Would consider Hong Kong, Shanghai, Chongqing and Panama City skyline to be really nice.

Panama City in the Republic of Panama

I do know that the neighborhood these skyscrappers in Panama city are located is zoned for housing. One of the problem in this neighborhood is overbuilding which has caused problems in finding street parking. Sometimes fire engines have a rough time entering certain streets. Also, overbuilding while connecting to the same old sewer and water lines has created some problems. And do not think about swimming in the ocean in front of those building since there is a river in Panama city which flows sewage into the bay.

Supposedly, the nice new skyscrappers in the UAE also have problems when it comes to water and garbage collecting.

So in China, are most skyscrappers for business use or housing.
