Books on the American Civil War

Already in my young life, I have spent a small fortune on books about the Civil War, and will probably continue to do so. What are some of your favorite titles on the Civil War, whether about the War in general or specific personalities or events? What Civil War books have you bought or read recently?

I have read the following in the past month:

Nothing but Victory: The Army of the Tennessee,1861-1865: Steven E. Woodworth: 9780375412189: Amazon.com: Books

Good reading for edification before the next Historum "dust up" on the topic of John Bell Hood's leadership.

Of all the books on this topic I've read (at one time just short of 100 titles in my personal library) I have to say that I got the most reading enjoyment from Foote's work - pure enjoyment.

And, I miss his contributions.

I would add one, a work of fiction I let myself read and enjoyed very much when it came out:

Well, in my not-so-young life I've done a bit of reading on the war, some of the books have been mentioned above. My favorite all-around general histories of the war have been McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom, Foote's trilogy, both Catton trilogies. I think Baltis has nailed down the best as far as credible, authoritative, peer-reviewed general histories of the war...can't get much better than those authors, my opinion of course.

As far as specific battles/campaigns I liked Wiley Sword's "Confederacy's Last Hurrah" on the Spring Hill, Franklin, Nashville campaign of the AOT, Larry Daniels' book on Shiloh, Gordon Rhea's books on the Wilderness campaign and there are others, can't remember all the titles right now. As they come to me I'll post them up here, they were very good, informative reads. Unfortunately my books are all MIA after a messy divorce, and that's a tragedy but stuff happens in life, am I right? At some point I'd like to replace many of them if I'm able to.

Good thread, I've already seen some titles posted that I'd love to read. Keep 'em comin'.

If you search for and find, for example, an Amazon book title of your choosing, and if you then highlight, copy and paste the url for it from the search bar to the reply window on Historum as one part of your response, then it will automatically show up when submitted as an image and clickable link.

You can also simply find a photo of the book, and copy then paste that in the body of your response using the Manage Attachments feature near the bottom of the page after you click on "Submit Reply." In that case it will not appear as a clickable link.

I hope that was explained as intended, and is helpful.

Obviously my latest obsession with the Civil War Gulf Coast shows through in my readings over the last three months...

I thought these two books were great. They were written by a guy who lives in the area where the events took place. His blog is also very informative and well written.

Macaria: Augusta J. Evans: Amazon.com: Books

Macaria is a novel by famed southern author Augusta Evans Wilson. The colonel of the regiment I am currently researching married her sister so I decided to read it. Its a pretty good book. Was popular in the North although it has been labled "southern propaganda". Its kind of melancholy. It gives a person a glimpse into the southern psyche. Augusta Evans was also a feminist and it shows in her writing.

Raiders and Blockaders is a collection of essays. I really enjoyed this book.
