It's basically a racist and classist term. Rednecks are too confident in themselves to make an issue out of it. Unlike the 'N' word it seems perfectly fine, perhaps encouraged even, to use publicly.

Most are relatively harmless. Some are rather vicious. Around here, some of the rednecks have just about cornered the meth making business. Weed is no longer the leading cash crop. But for the most part, they care very little what other groups think of them and revel in the tag.

Well, come on down here. HNIC is used for a certain world leader so much, you'd think it was the new title for his office.

So why did the miners need to wear red in the 1st place?

They were striking against the owners of the mines. There were protests and violence. The owners had the backing of hired guns. The union members wore the red bandanas so that they could recognize fellow union members I guess.

So they basically stood up to the big company's and fought for better rights?
so you could say a red neck is a union man? i'd guess through time the miners were demonised , and the term red neck evolved into a derogatory word.

At that time it meant a union man. They stood up to the big company's and they stood up to the US government.
