Yeah that's the first time I hear about that - Who was giving order to his generals if he was absent from time to time?

I have read (though can't cite a resource) that he often took solo carriage rides late at night and had a "safe house" where he spent nights sometimes. It was his equivalent to a personal Camp David. It drove his guards nuts to have him disappear, but, at the time presidents didn't live under a 24 X 7 X 365 Secret Service bubble like they do now. Citizens felt free to show up at the White House, knock on the door and expect to see the president, so he needed to get out sometimes. With no phones and no texts, they just had to wait for him to return and hope all was well. This is the same guy who went into Richmond after its fall, with Tad, took off and walked among citizens and freed slaves there.

Lincoln spent a great deal of time daily at the Soldier's Home in Washington. It was closer to the offices of the War Department and there was a military telegraph office that received messages from all fronts. He most often rode the distance alone on horseback and always stopped at the telegraph office to review the latest messages both on the way to the Home and on his return to the White House, often rather late at night. The route he took was somewhat wooded back then. The book "Team of Rivals" relates that he was shot at some nine times during those near daily treks.

Indeed. He did need to get away from it all, and he liked to take carriage rides and visit and even stay overnight at the Soldier's Home. And he often was unaccompanied by bodyguards. But I think his "disappearances" can be qualified as being for hours at a time, not days at a time.

I hear he was freakishly strong. Could hold an axe out in front of him without trembling and could stick his fingers in the barrel of a gun and lift it.

And tall. He was 6'4 which was considered gigantic for that era and still is.

He also could squat down and pick up a whiskey barrel and drink from the bunghole (actual term) but would apparently then spit it out as he wasnt much of a drinker

While Lincoln was not Jewish, it is an understandable mistake to make. He was, after all, shot in the temple.
