Agreed. Some of the reasons & answers quickly separated the wheat from the chaff.

Sorry, Viper. I just got back to the keyboard. I meant LBJ. As for Ford, it is for reasons that only a very few Americans would view him as such. It's more of a personal experience for us, involving the last battle of the Vietnam War, officially, and the following events regarding it. Don't want to divert this thread. Of course, many view the Nixon pardon as a tanker for his term, yet domestically his efforts to "dial down" lingering ranker over Nixon is worthy of note, and as Jimmy Carter said, deserving of the nation's thanks.

You sounded like a Democrat hack until you started actually hammering Jimmy Carter. Props for slashing at both sides.

And your pick is an excellent one [Buchanan]. It was my choice as well.

01. George Bush Sr. 18.4%
02. James Buchanan 12.5%
03. [tie] Jimmy Carter 10.5%
04. [tie]Andrew Johnson 10.5%
05. Richard Nixon 7.8%
06. Franklin Pierce
07. [tie] Warren G. Harding 5.2%
08. [tie] Lyndon B. Johnson 5.2%

Herbert Hoover 0.0%

It is pretty embarrassing for Historum to have elected [so far] George H.W. Bush as the *worst* president in the History of the United States. I mean seriously, Bush Sr. got more votes than Hoover and every other commonly known bad president??????

It shows two things. First, the people who are voting for him are ignorant. He wasn't perfect, if anything, he was an average president with some positive trends and a few bad spots.

Second, it shows that the ones that are intelligent and knowledgable are not getting through. We are failing as a historical website. Sadly, we are continually stepping our feet into the tar of sickening politics.

People aren't voting for Bush Sr., they are voting for Jr. but seem to be confused about the initials and the fact that Bush Jr. is no longer on the poll.

For whoever voted for JFK:

Yes he had some Camelot sized faults... but he is largely responsible for the American space program and putting the first man on the moon, which will (IMO) be remembered as America's greatest moment and crowning achievement.

He also inspired and and bolstered the spirit of a nation terrified by the possibility of MAD with the Soviets; not to mention showing remarkable and possibly world-saving restraint during the CMC.

I'm not saying he was perfect. I'm simply saying surely there is someone worse among the poll choices?

I just wanted to bump this quote, because I think it is hilarious and quite possibly Signature worthy.

I too have found it odd that HW Bush is "leading" in the poll. I probably am a "Democratic hack" but I honestly don't think HW Bush did all that bad a job as President.

Though I'd also wouldn' t quite say that Herbert Hoover was the worst President either. I've seen a couple of sources here and there that would indicate that much of FDR's New Deal would actually expand on projects done under Hoover. It's also hard to say as to whether or not anyone saw the signs that the banks and credit industries were headed for a cliff in the 1920s.

The best candidates for worst President in my opinion were all 19th Century Presidents either prior to the American Civil War for either ignoring slavery and "passing the buck" or supporting it outright. The charge could also be made of Andrew Johnson for his lack of support for the newly freed slaves and his inability to work with Congress.

Kennedy was also good with "jokes." My parents have a good understanding of German as a language, and made friends with some German citizens while my dad was stationed there... and according to they learned, the Germans would not say "I am a citizen of Berlin" the way Kennedy said it. What Kennedy said, as the Germans understood it, was "I am a doughnut." And the Germans my parents met in the 80s were STILL chuckling over that.
