Thumbs up Washington's pal, Witherspoon captured this week

During this week, in January 1746, George Washington's future Scottish buddy (who signed the Declaraion of Independence in 1776)-John Witherspoon, was captured at the Battle of Falkirk in Stirlingshire, Scotland In January 1746 fighting on the Redcoat side in what was Jacobite leader ''Bonnie Prince Charlie's last military truimph over Hanoverian troops in the 1745-46 Jacobite Rebellion.
Witherspoon was taken to, and imprisoned in Doune (pronounced Doon'') Castle a still splendid structure ,which stands on the banks of the Bonnie Doune River in Perthshire, Scotland.
The Jacobites used Doune Castle (which was extensively used for location shots in the second ''Monty Python'' film) as a type of ''Colditz'' for Hanoverian VIP P.O.W.S like Witherspoon.
Witherspoon made a daring escape down the castle's precipitious walls and reached the west Scotland coast where he took ship for the 13 colonies in America -and the rest is history.
Fighting with his buddy Washington against the Redcoats- whom he had once served at the Battle of Falkirk in January 1746, against 'Bonnie'' Prince Charlie and his Highland clansmen.
Incidentally, present Hollywood American blonde beauty rose, Reece Witherspoon, claims direct American descent from Doune Castle ecapee. John Witherspoon.
If any of you guys reading this in the USA get the chance to visit beautifull Doune Castle take youir fishing rod as the River Doune, which meanders past the Castle is loaded with brown trout.

Witherspoon was head of Princeton, then College of New Jersey, and a Presbyterian school.

Yes Betgo-he was, indeed, head of Princeton and his Presbyterianism is why he was fighting on the Hanoverian Redcoat side when captured at the Battle of Falkirk in 1746 against Catholic ''Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Highlanders and incarcerated in Doune Castle.
His celebrated American descendant Hollywood movie star Reece Witherspoon, has visited Scotland to see where John came from.

I think Presbyterians tended to be patriots in the American Revolution, while Scottish highlanders were mostly loyalists.

Dame Flora McDonald on the Isle of Skye who helped Jacobite leader 'Bonnie'' Prince Charlie escape King George's Hanoverian Redcoats by dressing Charlie up as her maid ''Betty Burke'so he culd catch the French warship back to France and exile.in 1746.
However, Flora Macdonald subsequently emigrated with her sons to North Carolina U.S.A. and supported King GEORGE 111 during the War of Independence 1776-83.
