This is incorrect.

There was retribution after the American Civil War, but more notably conducted by the losing side rather than against them.

Incorrect--how so? Not one former Confederate was held to account for his actions against the United States government. The singular prosecution that of poor Wirz was not even for rebellion but for mistreatment of prisoners. In every civil war I've ever heard of retribution could have been exacted for the simple fact of having prisoners.

You would expect Jeff Davis to have been tried and convicted if nothing but as a symbolic measure, just ask Charles I, Louis XV and Nicolas II.

As Viperlord comments, it is utterly unbelievable that having suffered a crushing defeat, the South in the short span of 2 decades was essentially able to reverse the consequences of defeat and dictate policy in the South until the 1960's.

I was only referring to how there were modern civil wars (in the 20th century) where there was not retribution after the conclusion of those wars, hence the "alone among all the civil wars throughout history" statement is not really accurate.

James Garfield deserves mention. He could write Greek with one hand while simultaneously writing Latin with the other.
