Greatest General in American History?

Who do you think the greatest general in American history is? Who had all the qualities that made them a great general and leader?

Ah, I forgot to add "other" so I hope your general is on the list.

George C Marshall. One of the only two Americans ever to be promoted to 5 stars. Chief of Staff of the Army during WW-II. Author of the Marshall Plan. The man who won the Cold War, before it had even started. And the only general in history ever to win a Nobel Prize.

Like... is there any doubt? At all?

The I'll admit that Washington might... just might... come in a distant second

There were five Generals of the Army:

Geo Marshall

Eisenhower

MacArthuer

Hap Arnold (USAAF and the only USAF 5* )

Omar Bradley (in 1950)

Just for information.

Ah ha! I wasn't counting Hap, and I thought Bradley and MacArthur only made it up to 4 stars. Thanks for the correction, pikeshot!

Easy choice - General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. The man was a true genius, he stands head and shoulders above all the others.

After MacArthur I think that Washington might get my second pick, and then possibly Grant.

Really?

His actions in the buildup to the US joining WW2 were somewhat less than a great military commander. Dismissing an enemy as racially inferior, not bothering with intelligence reports on the Japanese forces.

Eisenhower made a wonderful comment on how the wrong General made the last stand in the Phillapenes.

During Korea his leadership was laughable. Ignoring intelligence, replacing commanders that didn't agree with his view of the North Korean threat then duplicating this in the run up to China getting involved. Diverting forces for personal projects, refusing to believe commanders if their reports didn't match the gossip he received at dinner parties, lying outright to Washington about what was happening.

But he was good at controlling the media, victories were his and his alone whilst defeats were the faults of subordinates.
