Whites vs Colored Segregation - How were Asians, Hispanics, etc. treated?

When I always hear about racial segregation in history, such as bathroom segregation for whites and colored people, and the segregation of colored people on buses from the Rosa Parks incident, I always hear of the term "colored" referring to black people. My question is - how were people that weren't white and weren't black treated (e.g. Asians, Hispanics, etc)? From my research, I figure they weren't white, so they would fall in the colored category. Were they generally treated as poorly as blacks were treated?

Thanks.

I helped my wife research and write a paper on this very subject so I knew what I would want to share on the topic, but having written this once before,( ), I just thought I would post the links.

Thanks for the info. From just a quick look, it looks very interesting. I'll have a thorough read-through tomorrow.

Thanks

Naturally one cannot lump racism to one area of the country, time or even city. Racism lived side by side with those not racist in all eras.

In the second half of the 19th Century, the plight of Chinese immigrants to the Pacific Coast bore more than a little resemblance to that of their black countrymen in the South. Many 'Chinatowns' - indeed, effectively miniature Chinas in which the inhabitants met all of their community's own needs - were created as a result.

'Ghettos' can form for many reasons one of which is a 'Presevation Function' in that are local culture, religious, linguistic needs can be satisfied and preserved in that area.

In terms of legal segregation in the south, my understanding is Asians and Mexicans were considered white.

It definitely was no picnic for the Chinese. They were not slaves, but they were subjected to a good amount of prejudice.

There is a negative tone to this blog, but the timeline presented is sourced and appears fairly accurate - especially with regard to US laws - scroll down to see it:
