Oh and by the way he died. | Crassus is the one who had defeated Spartacus, isn't he?
I read that he was also fabulously greedy and the Persian king had fun pouring molten gold into his mouth when his body was brought to him.

Oh and by the way he died. | Definitively one of my main candidates too, as you can read in the ongoing Crassus' thread.

And I thought Roman History in University was a total brain wrap. The more you read into Roman History the more you realize that, despite their influence on our civilization (i.e. architecture and law) we have little social similarities.

Is it true that he was used as a mounting stool for the Parthian king?

JC | No that was Valerian, the Roman Emperor who was captured by Shapur I in the aftermath of a battle fought at Edessa in 260 AD.
According to legend, Crassus was executed by the Parthians by having molten gold poured down his throat; his head was summarily used as a trophy. Valerian, on the other hand, was used as a mounting stool and footstool at feasts. When he died his body was stuffed and displayed in a Persian temple.

The campaign of Julianos the Apostate was also quite a disaster, even without him being killed. Quote:

His personal fortune of @ 800,000,000? Secstercis made him the richest man within the roman sphere of influence.
It would seem that this man had his fingers in many pies (landlording, fire brigade, water control, the list goes on). Unfortunately for him, the defeat of a rebel slave army early in his career, did not make him a general.
