Who gave us pornography?

Well, History Channel did not completely answer this question. They only mentioned the first civilisation that is somehow "perveted," and that was Sumer.

But what about the pornography?

I watched the part where they analyze an ancient Egyptian magazine that reveals sexual positions.

India is a strong option, too.

Re: Who gave us pornography?

This depends on how you define "pornography".

If you simply imply depictions of anatomically correct nudes, these appear in effectively every culture.

Take for instance, those Stone Age "Venuses" that depict fat women with huge butts and breasts - presumably that now-extinct culture's idea of the perfect woman. Were these created as art or for ritual signficance, or were they just made to be something sexy to fantacize about?

Nubile young women, clad in loincloths, are depicted in Egyptian, Indian, and Mykenaean art. Naked boys and girls (but mostly boys ) appear in Greek art. Celtic sculptures have been found in pre-Roman western Europe that appear to depict nude or scantilly-attired dancing girls.

Porn as we understand it today originated - at the very latest - in Imperial Rome. Paintings of erotic scenes of all natures appear on the walls of palaces, taverns, even the bedrooms and livingrooms of common people. The wall paintings of Pompeii are so explicit that the Italian government didn't even allow women and children to look at them until the 1900s.

Third-Fourth Century wall paintings from Roman Sicily (namely Piazza Armerina) depict girls exercising in what look just like modern bikinis. Such garments have even be found, preserved, in Roman Britain, suggesting that they were a widespread and popular style.

It's not porn unless it's "banned in Boston". No prohibition, no porn.

If pornography is any material to do with sexual gratification on some level, then the Greeks certainly are a prime candidate. There is a certain poet, whose name escapes me, who wrote filthy poetry all the time about his sexual experiences and fantasies. Dildoes were used as well in Ancient Greece, and think of the Herma, erections and genitals everywhere, oh my!

Satyrs and centaurs were almost always depicted as being extremely sexually aroused. And extremely well-endowed

If I hadn't known you were a teenage boy, this would have sealed the deal.
