The Empire
Learning about the fall of empires is such great fun. I know much more of Imperial Rome than the Roman Republic, not that I know that much on either.

The late Republic. I mean who isn't interested in a period that is full of fascinating and powerful personalities? Caesar, Octavian, Anthony, Pompey, Crassus, Sulla, Marius, Cato, Brutus, and there are many, many more.

To me the Republic is a little bit more interesting. I like reading how Rome grew into the dominant power of the Mediterranean Sea. And the late republic have some of the most interesting people in Roman history, particularly Julius Caesar.

My area of interest begins with Romulus and ends with Alexander Severus. After that my interest wanes.

I love it all to a point, but my area of special interest begins with Vespasian and ends with Diocletian.

Interesting....I seem to be in a minority (as frequently, I am).
My interest begins roughly with Diocletian and sort of ends with the establishment of the Christian barbarian kingdoms around 500 AD. I am particularly interested in the army of the late Empire, and in the aspect of those kingdoms as preservers of Romanitas rather than its destroyer. (Cue the controversy chorus! )
It is hard to really say why the period interests me, but the Principate was a very complicated mechanism, and it is something of a miracle that it functioned as well as it did. It is also interesting to trace the co-opting of the Church as an agent of the State.
There is no way I can agree that Christianity destroyed the Roman Empire.
