To the Glorious Greeks and Romans!!

I had grown up reading about Greek and Roman History and they have never failed to impress me.

I would like to hear the views of the current day Greeks and Romans on the following,

-- Is the common present day Italian/Greek aware of his country's great history and feel proud of it (or) is it just a story from a past long last?
-- Do rivalries like Spartan and Athenian still exist?
-- How does an Italian feel when he thinks about the Glory days of the Roman empire and the power it had on the world's culture? How does a Greek feel when he thinks about Alexander's empire? Are they just another story for them (or) do they still inspire patriotism?
-- Are there sections of people who still speak Old Latin and Greek (apart from the Vatican)? Are there measures taken by the respective governments to preserve these languages?

Sparta is in Turkey... So it's dumb to hate Athens when you're a Turkish city

MAY ALL PAY HEED!! ONE FROM INDIA ITSELF HAS GIVEN ROME IT'S DUE!!!! for all you cerephiles

1: Yes, they are very very proud. Greece more then Italy.
2: If I am correct Sparta is dead. Other then that I think Rome did alot to brake down the whole City-state concept. Time did the rest. If it survived long enough, Ottomans finished it off.
3: I'm sure most Italians and Greeks feel proud, but aren't really hell bent on recreating.
4: I can just about promise you Greece is preserving the languange. Latin is probably still spoken but only as a side thing, done in small groups, and not as the main language.

Now that's surprising. I thought Sparta was in the Greece mainland.

May have mistaken it with a region or something in Turkey.

I just googled. There's a town in Greece mainland called "Sparti" and even the old maps showed Sparta in the Greece mainland?

It.. was.

Sparta was destroyed entirely and no longer exists in Greek proper.
