was Zeus a real person

Was Zeus, the leader of the Greek Gods, at one point a real person? I mean he was supposed to have special powers like creating lightning... were these attributes just given to him after he died? Were all Greek Gods real people at some point?

Probably all Gods we're men of great power an influence at some point, yes.

Osiris was supposed to be a man, killed by Seth and then reborn because of Isis.

I think that, almost all religions began with a man.

I agree. I'm sure Zeus was a man at some point and probably a lightning bolt struck somebody he was mad at, and then the folk lore grew and grew and eventually he became a God.

Hehe, I don't know about the lightning bold, but he probably had a voice that sounded just like thunder or something. And he got associated with thunder and lightning

God or gods tend to grow larger & more omnipotent through the ages, plus it helps keep society, people & kids in check.

He also killed his father to take leadership, suggesting he came from a distant tribal pre-civilised past

Personally, I think it is far more likely (to go with this example) that "Zeus" started out as a vaguely defined force/spirit who controlled lightning, and so was sacrificed to to avert lightning strikes.

As time went on Zeus and his fellow spirit/forces who controlled other aspects of nature gradually picked up images, until eventually you have a system of antromorphic gods.

Looks like a myth to me.

I think people created religions in the past to control other the masses to be honest. Like in Egypt with the phroahs or the divine right of kings idea that kings use to throw around. Though also to some degree explain the world around them.

I think your last sentence is a good explanation of why religions came to be. In terms of using religion to control others...that is something that came along well after its creation.
