Many women were employed as prostitutes in ancient Rome, it was a lucrative trade for the owners of female slaves.

n 'Goddesses. whores, wives and slaves, women in classical antiquity' Sarah B. Pomeroy wrote:

'Employment in the sex trade brought great profit to the owners of female slaves. Women worked as prostitutes in brothels or in inns or baths open to the public. Exposed baby girls and daughters sold by their parents were raised for this trade. In this same category, but at a higher level, were the women trained to work as actresses and entertainers of all types. Actresses sometimes appeared nude and performed sexual acts on stage. Eucharis, a young performer who had been given her freedom sometime before her death at the age of fourteen performed in the chorus at respectable public games given as 'Greek theatre' and is described as "learned" and "skilled" in her epitaph.'

I am appalled! I have been led astray.

I don't mind making an apology for having posted mis-information, if I'm wrong I'm wrong, but I've apparently been taken in by some fundi- Christian anti-Catholic propaganda.

At least that's what it looks like right now.

A few years back (maybe 10) there were stories printed in reputable places, I don't remember where, and there was at least one documentary shown on the tube maybe by discovery Channel which told a tale of there being a tunnel between a monastery and a nunnery which was filled with urns containing fetus's. You can imagine the story which went with this tale.

When I went looking for a citation for this story I came up empty, but when I Googled every possible combination of words which should have brought me the source - I came up with a hoax perpetrated by a character named "Alberto Rivera" who was a Christian Fundi on a life's mission to slander the Catholics. The hoax Alberto Rivera was selling was an identical story to what I was looking for confirmation for except it was in Spain.

So apparently the French catacombs story was another of his yarns. But I'm lacking proof for even that.

So I will acknowledge my (apparent) mistake and move on.

In answer to your second question: being a Christian on a holy pious morality crusade against "whores" is a recurring theme throughout history. It has happened (almost always with tragic result) many times in many places. IMO It's about time for the Christians to take care of your own backyard and leave the moral crusades (against the "other") to the history books.

Thanks for that, I now respectfully recall my earlier troll comment.
