Ancient Egyptian Coke-heads

In 1992 a German toxicologist released a report that shook the world of Egyptology. She claimed that she had found, on 3,000 year old mummies, traces of nicotine and cocaine; both plants indigenous to the New World. How was this possible? What was the cause?

The contamination claim is simply dissembling and doesn't hold up to scrutiny. I voted for no. 2.

True. I don't think ancient Egyptiants were using cocaine. I voted for no. 3.

I voted for No.2 since that's the only option that makes sense to me, though I thought that nations of the Americas didn't have any trading relationships with other nations in Asia.

My vote goes to the option you left out. - Related Old World alkaloids.

In case anyone didn't know, nicotine plants grew in Africa too...

This claim has been around for some years. There is even a pretty good documentary,"The Case Of The Nicotine Mummies"

The answer may be simple, such as locally obtained substances,or more startling. As far as I know, cocaine only comes from from the coca plant, found only in South America.

That implies, but does not prove: that ancient Egyptians traded with pre Columbian South America,a not outrageous idea. Or that they traded with somebody who traded with South America, which seems more likely to me.

There are some pretty good articles on line. They make it hard to dismiss the findings out of hand.

Indirect trade, in my opinion, is the most likely scenario. If the Egyptians had traded for cocaine and/or tobacco, it would most likely be a luxury item...and potentially an item that was used in the mummification process. I could easily see the highs of the drugs being connected with a religious experience, and it would fit with the Egyptian way of thinking to then use them in the preservation of the body for the afterlife.
