Is ancient Athens overrated?

Some say it was.... What do you think? Was Athenian culture overrated? Were the thinkers that Athens had produced, overrated too?

Well compared to other members of historum I'm ignorant haha but I think that its not overrated, Athens is basically the cradle of democracy and of the Western civilization. Athens is the home of the greatest ancient philosophers, (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, etc.) Mathematicians, etc. They also inspired may great people like Alexander the Great and civilzations like Rome. And it was also strong militarily, defeating the Persian empire in Salamina, Marathon, etc. So no I don't think that Athens is overrated.

I think a case can be made that when compared against Sparta, Sparta tends to be underrated and Athens, a bit overrated.

No I do not think the Athenians are overrated, Athens produced some great minds that are still highly valued and respected to this very day, and have been all through out history. The birth place of democracy, great philosophers and scientists - definitely not over rated IMO.

But I would say that I think some of the other states of Greece were slightly underrated and deserve far more credit than they receive currently.

He asks a fair question, only trolling I see is your comment.

Actually I think Sparta is underrated, people only latch onto specifics about Sparta and do not see past Leonidas and his 300 men.
