The worst Roman Emperor

Who in your opinion is the worst roman Emperor?

I made a selection of four, but if you are from the opinion someone else furfilles that spot you can always chose the ''other'' option.

- Caligula
- Elagabalus
- Commodus
- Nero
- Other (please do explain)

Commodus was simpy the most worthless of the four on the list, closely followed by Elagabalus - and I say this not for their antics, but because they let their underlings run the Empire for them, they were simply emperors in name only.

Caligula at least ruled, and Nero had some positive attributes.

Well, among some left leaning Italian historians, Theodosious I, Gratian and Velentinian II, thanks to the Edict of Thessalonica, acquired the nickname of "Taliban Emperors". But this is an anti historical judgment, or at least out of context.

Personally, I would indicate Elagabalus with is Deus Sol Invictus and all the other oddities so far from Roman tradition.

None on your list compare to the complete waste of space that was Honorius.

But at least he had a competent regent do all the work for him.

"At that time they say that the Emperor Honorius in Ravenna received the message from one of the eunuchs, evidently a keeper of the poultry, that Rome had perished. And he cried out and said, 'And yet it has just eaten from my hands!' For he had a very large cock, Rome by name; and the eunuch comprehending his words said that it was the city of Rome which had perished at the hands of Alaric, and the emperor with a sigh of relief answered quickly: 'But I, my good fellow, thought that my fowl Rome had perished.' So great, they say, was the folly with which this emperor was possessed."

Procopius, The Vandalic War (III.2.25-26)
Need I say more.

And in case words are not enough, I'll leave you with this painting of the Emperor Honorius recieving news of Rome's fall. Tellingly the painting is titled: "The Favourites of the Emperor Honorius."

Good to see a leader with his priorities in the right order

He was one of those "bird people" that sit in the park and give you the stink eye as you walk past... except he was also the most powerful man in the known world... Yeah, that's bad.
