Ancient Poisons

Accounts of people being assassinated via poison in pre-modern times are fairly common - how and with what substances was this most commonly done?

Is the legend about Mithridates of Pontos and his alleged immunity to poisons medically possible?

I know this isn't ancient history, but your thread reminds me of
Marie Besnard (France).

She supposedly poisoned a great many of her family
members in the late 1940s.

It is very easy to build an immunity to all sorts of medicines, just look at people on pain meds or illicit drugs that have to keep upping their dosages. When you go into poisons, only a few are known to be undergo this incremental process, arsenic being one of the best known. The reason for it is that there are specific proteins in the body that bond to it in order to hinder organ damage.

Thank you paramedic training.
