The Third Punic War

The kicking of Punic derriere seems to have become a Scipio family tradition. However, the great Scipio Aemilianus was in fact an adoptee; he had rode with his father, an Aemilius Paulus, at Pydna in 168 BCE.

The Third Punic War doesn't get much press. Of course the First War was full of bloody naval engagements, and the Second War saw some of the most dramatic and exotic land battles of Antiquity. In contrast, the Third Punic War (149-146 BCE) consisted of little more than Aemilianus' siege of Carthage - which concluded in upwards of 50,000 people being sold into slavery, and the city destroyed.

However you may feel about the Phoenician city of Qart Hadasht, it was a brutal and tragic demise for one of Antiquity's greatest cities, and a proud nation of sea-farers.

If the 'Similar Threads' list is anything to go by, I am the first to start a thread about the Third Punic War in Historumic history. Case in point!

well it doesn't get much press because, as my favorite book on ancients battles says, It was a "sad epilogue to an already epic story"

It was an epic fight. I've studied it but yes a war of overwhelming power versus a small and already beaten nation.

Not as epic as first two Punic Wars but no less interesting to say the least. A beaten and bloodied city finally taken out by its long-time nemesis.

only 17,000? exactly. Rome lost 17,000 on a good day in the previous two wars.

a very excellently walled, and likely fanatically defended, city.

Now all I'm saying is that compared to the past two wars, this one was pretty modest, even if it was smaller. It's just too far eclipsed to get much attention

Yeah, but it was a mighty good fight.
