^ I first saw this suggested by Beatrice Lumpkin in her treatise on the legacy of Egyptian mathematics.

What about Bali, yes the island of Bali, anytime in history, I mean it is a truly beautiful paradise (although (been there myself 3 times), good food, nice weather, in fact if I had a way to make a decent living there, I would move there in a heartbeat.

This is my answer too. I would love to be a Paleolithic hunter-gatherer.

I really like the idea of living in a time where survival is boiled down to its essence.

I'd trade off the longer lifespan and material comfort of the modern society in a heartbeat. Neither of those have ever been important to me.

I hope I don't sound like a crackpot survivalist.

Celtic clan. Probably in Wales or Ireland before the Romans were around in those parts.

Would want to live in Macedon through the time period where it was rising in the Greek world, including the conquests of Alexander.

None of them. All of them had terrible aspects that are often forgotten.
I would have found the ancient Greeks or Phoenicians most interesting, though.

Assuming I'm being born to a humble background, I'll choose Rome after the Marian reforms. An average person was born into poverty, no matter which ancient civilization we are discussing. So the main priority as I see it, would be escaping that life of poverty.

I figure a career in the Roman Army is as good as an escape as any, so long as I'm lucky enough to not up dead in a ditch on one campaign or another. The standard of living in the Army and nutrition and health care would certainly be better on average, and if you die in battle...well I suppose a ditch in Gaul or Germania beats a gutter in Rome.

If I had to be an ancient city dweller however, I guess I'd go with the pearl of the Mediterranean, Alexandria. Alexandria during the Ptolemaic period seems a better place to call home than Rome during the Republic.

Seleucid Empire, so I can use hindsight to prevent its destruction.
