Alexander the great

Was he only undefeated because the other general sucked and his army was better? or was he really a genius?

He was handed a very finely honed tool in the Macedonian Army that his father left him. Granted, he made extremely good use of it, and he was indeed one of the better generals that history has produced, but I wouldn't say he was top ten.

I might put him in top ten, however, I certainly don't believe that he was the best, as most people make him out to be.

He was definitely one of the most brilliant generals ever.

Yes, he was not "chellanged" enough. I dont think he really is that a genius. But he is a great military commander.

But like sun tzu said: A great general is one that defeats its enemies with ease.

He knew how to use what he had. Granted he might not have created the Macedonian army that he inherited from his father but this isn't the same army he used. He incorporated other units, and tactics.

He used his army to fight all kinds of armies and all kinds of ways, so I don't think it's because other people sucked.

I thought he said the top generals defeat enemies without resort to fighting?

Well he says the other one I said too.

Now when I think about it. Give me 500 men with 24 ft pikes agianst 1000 men with 6 ft pikes, I most likely will win the fight, but I am no miliary genious.

You do know 24 ft pikes are very unwieldy right? And if the phalanx ever lose its coherence(which is not that hard), they'd be all dead. All your opponent needs is to send 200 men to attack your phalanx from behind.

The two are not unrelated in the real world. Very seldom do generals we define as good win battles where their opponents are also good. Every Hannibal needs a Varro.
