Although the popular imagination does not account for this period of history, the period of 500-700 is much more understood than 850-950, for example.

Until the 8th century, Visigothic Spain is generally the most well-understood (next to Italy) region of the post-Roman west. Virtually nothing is a mystery to us here.

For the period between 500-550, the term "Dark Age" is as bad as using it to describe the 2nd century. Familiarity with the material makes this quite clear- although in our society, popular imagination does not account for this, and knowledge of the period is generally kept between a circle of academic specialists, and here, on Historum

Sources are extremely abundant for this period, and pan-Mediterranean connectivity is very well attested, and lends to our variety of material.

The period of 550-650 is different, in that there is a marked and very real decline.

Comparitively the first 50 year period of Islamic Spain is generally mich less understood.
The issue I have always had with the term "Dark Age" is not so much the term itself, it's a cool title! The issue I have has more to do with the loading of flat out incorrect attributes: I.E. "The world was plunged into a period of darkness for 1000 years where science was brutally suppressed by the Church and the technology of the world ceased to develop."

There was certainly a catastrophe, but it did not cover the entire world, and it did not effect everywhere at once. Areas like Italy were effected to varying levels by a series of misfortunes - Justinian's invasion being the worst.

The Roman Empire of the fourth and fifth centuries, I wouldn't say were less capable of handling situations than they were in the 2nd and 3rd. The pressures were considerably less in the third and the whole empire almost collapsed in a very decisive sort of way.

Racism never makes much sense, but your flavor is particularly bizarre. Not to mention, about a millennium and a half too irrelevant.

I'll go for the Lombards: they have left a beautiful yet underrated artistical legacy in Northern and Southern Italy; unfortunately(well, fortunately for the Byzantines of the VIIIth century) the Lombards' presence in my town can hardly be noticed.

If you would like to discuss the racial implications of this or any other movie, I'd be happy to post on a relevant thread, or ease your distressed sensibilities via PM. You will not derail this thread with an off-topic ad hominem.

You would also do well to note that Attila himself was hardly opposed to those 'Germanic clowns' - his name may very well be the Gothic word for 'Daddy'.

There is no secret why the Goths call him daddy since he intermingled with many beautiful Caucasian women like a true mongol that he was.

Ah, so a true Mongol feels a special urge to procreate with 'Caucasian' women? Since when was Attila a Mongol?

"Jordanes, a Goth writing in Italy in 551, a century after the collapse of the Hunnic Empire, describes the Huns as a "savage race, which dwelt at first in the swamps, a stunted, foul and puny tribe, scarcely human, and having no language save one which bore but slight resemblance to human speech."
"They made their foes flee in horror because their swarthy aspect was fearful, and they had, if I may call it so, a sort of shapeless lump, not a head, with pin-holes rather than eyes. Their hardihood is evident in their wild appearance, and they are beings who are cruel to their children on the very day they are born. For they cut the cheeks of the males with a sword, so that before they receive the nourishment of milk they must learn to endure wounds. Hence they grow old beardless and their young men are without comeliness, because a face furrowed by the sword spoils by its scars the natural beauty of a beard. They are short in stature, quick in bodily movement, alert horsemen, broad shouldered, ready in the use of bow and arrow, and have firm-set necks which are ever erect in pride. Though they live in the form of men, they have the cruelty of wild beasts"

Read the bold. The Huns were clearly of Mongoloid descent. Asians are stocky, short, broad shouldered and have long necks.
