Just a quick question, who was the last Roman Emperor (This includes the Byzantine Emperors) to set foot in Rome?
I was just wondering when the Roman Empire was really no longer the Roman Empire, I'm especially interested in the lost of Rome.

In 663 CE Konstantine II. visited Rome - the preceeding visitor was Constantine II. in 357 AD. »For reconciling such repugnancies, Chronologers have sometimes doubled the persons of men.« Sir Isaak Newton [The Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms Amended, p. 4., 1728] | |

Kiwi, I think you have to clarify , whether you include the latin emperors of Constantinople (1204-1261) . the claimants in exile of the palaiologan dynasty (1453-1502) and the holy roman emperors (962-1806) ........

Byzantium emperors continued to 1453 ... or 1502 if you include the claimants in exile ...... and if you accept the period in question to last to those years .. then the period includes also the holy roman emperors ... and the latin emperors of Constantinople ........
That made me slightly confused ........

Kiwi: "I was just wondering when the Roman Empire was really no longer the Roman Empire, I'm especially interested in the lost of Rome."
The end of the Roman Empire (tm) falls into a 'higly repetitive period' of traditional history:
The Konstantin IIs. visited Rome in 663 CE and 357 AD.
They died five years later.
They had banished the Pope.
Their fathers carried (as eastern Emperors) the job name Heracles.
These had a unusually long regency of 31 years.
This regency began with the killing of Phokas in 610 CE and 306 AD.
The 'Mother of Emperor Konstantin' acquired the Holy Cross at Jerusalem in 629 CE and 325 AD.
...
CE = Common Era (this year is 2009 CE)
AD = Anno Domini (count refers to year of presumed birth of Christ)

Alright, just for clarification purposes.
Who was the last Western Roman Emperor to step in Rome? And who was the last Eastern Roman Emperor to step in Rome?
