Did the Roman Empire ever really fall?

Salutations Everyone,

A question that I have most recently been pondering is this: Did the Roman Empire ever truly "fall" or did it actually just change into different forms? Such as the transformation into the Byzantine Empire.

P.S.
Its my first post, so be kind.

Sardinia and Sicily are part of Italy. There's that.

Re: Did the Roman Empire ever really fall?

Yes it did, Then again, no it didn't. It most certainly fell, as do all empires, but it also metamorphosed. The Eastern (or Byzantine) Empire survived longer than the Western Roman Empire. Or did it? The Western Roman Empire still exists today in the form of the Roman Catholic Church (This is opinion, nothing else).

It is also possible that the Eastern Roman Empire existed in another form until relatively recently (again this is speculation on my paart) as the Holy Roman Empire.

Well, maybe the Eastern Roman Empire didn't fall - it just changed dynasties and religion.

I agree with you on the bit about the Western Empire existing still in the form of the Roman Catholic Church, but not with your speculation that the Eastern Empire was survied by the Holy Roman Empire. The Holy Roman Empire was a Germanic state rather than a Roman or a Greek one.

That's the basic problem here - neither the Romans or the Byzantines were actually Greek or Roman. The fact that the Holy Roman Empire (originally Frankish rather than Germanic) became a Mittel-European power-bloc does not deny that it's conception was Byzantine in origin.

The Vatican City is the modern-day Roman Empire?
