That certain axe wielding Norseman at the battle of Stamford Bridge. He is one of my favorites even though his name is lost to history. :/

I will pick Fornjot, whom was spoken about in the Orkneyinga as having been a king that reigned over Gotland which is modern day Finland and Kvenland. Myself, being one of the 10,000 or more descendants of William the Conqueror, can trace my lineage into this line. It has never been proven that many of those ancients were anything other than legendary, but it still makes good conversation.

By the way, germans used axes, but the most common weapon they had, was a very short spear, which they used as a sword.
In 5-6 century, thats when they started using bigger swords. Of course nobody said "Do not take swords from the enemy bodies", many were seeing with it.

The Franks were much more famous for axes than the Norse ... Frank comes from their favourite weapon, the francisca axe (or possibly, the axe may have been named after the Franks).

At least in southern Scandinavia the use of Roman swords seems to have been rather popular. From the bogs at Illerup in Denmark archeologists have retreived more Roman swords than from the whole Roman Empire. The swords were wielded by warriors from what is now southern Norway or western Sweden. These warriors were obviously defeated and their weapons and other belongings where sacrificed in lakes.
Many of the offerings are from the third century AD.

One favourite ought to be the mythical Tjalfi. He became the servant of the god Tor and accompanied him on several exciting adventures. Later when he became old he led his people to colonize the island of Gotland (where he is known under the name Tjelvar).
