Imaginative history cannot reach the complexity of real history?

No matter how hard writers try, imaginative history (history of future societies of humans or other sapient species or history of fictional settings) tends to be much simplified.
Then again, the complexity of real history is a major part of its charm.

I mean we have had 4000+ years to get interesting stuff written

But i mean

Discworld
Dragon Age
Mass Effect

All have quite interesting back story's that can have multiple meanings and are in some cases subjective a bit like the souls series

The charm of real history is that you couldn't make it up--it's always more interesting than fiction.

Even contemporary history is murky, and a good example is the development of Tibet (or Xizang)
