Re: Folk Costumes

Lovely outfits Cannelidis.
By the way Cannelidis i have noticed a similiarity between the outfits from the region of Pirin in Bulgaria, and some outfits from Greece:
Bulgarian outfit from Pirin Mountains:

Greek folklore outfit:

PS: It is interesting to me by the way, that in the past people could tell from which region the other person is just by looking at his outfit. Today that can't happen at least here in Bulgaria, i could recognize where somebody if from by his dialect dough.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit I'm not really sure what constitutes the definition of a folk costume, but these seem to fit in with the rest of the thread.

Well, the thing is - every country had its own. As we were in diaspora and had so many separate communities that only communicated via letter, if at all. In many countries at this or other time traditional clothes were forbidden. Ekaterina II has forbidden wearing of Jewish clothes and speaking Yiddish. Nikolai I was forbidden them growing side-burns (they were forcefully cut); the women were not allowed to wear wigs (they were checked by pulling hair at meeting). They are forbidden to purchase silk (for the long men's clothes) or furs (for the hats), etc...

Here are some:

Polish Jews, 17th century:

Russian Jews in the Settlement zone, 19th century, a tailor:

Some of the Orthodox movements today wear something similar on Sabbath.

Here are some Odessa Jews, illustration from 1876:

Here is a painting made by Pimonenko in 1899, called the victim of fanaticism. IT was painting following a scandal in the papers of Jewish community beating a young woman who has fallen in love with a non-Jewish Blacksmith and converted to Christianity. Not connected to this theme, however, the clothes of Ukranian Jews are seen here:

Re: Folk Costumes

Vera i like the Yemenite Jewish outfit. If the guy didn't had sideburns i would mistake him for an ottoman turk, with that hat.
Also the Bavarian jews looks very nice, respectful, western, and expensive outfit.
