The Good Things Muslims Have done for US

Living among Muslims as a non-Muslim has made me see that when I was in the West, I had no concept of Muslim contributions to mankind.

With so much attention being shed on a few radical maniacs, perhaps a taste of what the moderate majority of Muslims of the world have for an inheritance that benefits us all.

Seriously though i just don't know enough, about muslim contributions to make a statement. I'm fairly sure they made some fairly big advances in medicine and architecture but this was largley ignored by the west.

Although I do believe that the Muslim castles did inspire the Crusaders to build similar structures when they returned.

Oh...you're on the right trail. Look around online.

I know tons, but would rather let others add their bits first.

Re: The Good Things Muslims Have done for US

Having lived in Egypt, spent seven weeks in Pakistan, visited Saudi Arabia, rubbed elbows with Muslims in England, Canada, and the USA, I can attest what should be assumed in the first place: they're just people. Of the billions of Muslims -- some of whom are ultra-religious, but most of whom are moderately religious or only culturally/traditionally Muslim and not religious at all -- most want exactly the same fundamental things most non-Muslims of every stripe want: a roof over their heads, food on the table, and neither to kill or to be killed.

Good thread, Clarence.

Medicine, for example Ibn Sina was the first to recognize how and why epidemics spread; Algebra, Astronomy, Algorithm...

Washing and bathing are religious requirements for Muslims, which is perhaps why they perfected the recipe for soap which we still use today. The ancient Egyptians had soap of a kind, as did the Romans who used it more as a pomade. But it was the Arabs who combined vegetable oils with sodium hydroxide and aromatics such as thyme oil. One of the Crusaders' most striking characteristics, to Arab nostrils, was that they did not wash. Shampoo was introduced to England by a Muslim who opened Mahomed's Indian Vapour Baths on Brighton seafront in 1759 and was appointed Shampooing Surgeon to Kings George IV and William IV.

If you tell me that Person A is a Muslim and Person B is a Christian, you have told me absolutely nothing about how "good" they are.
