If we're talking about the 19th century then it's definitely French and Russian literature. We had to read a whole lot of French and Russian pieces in high school, but not so much British or American novels.

Mark Twain, Frank Norris and Mr. Dickens get my votes.

The fault is on your educational system, not on the literature of UK and USA. Try reading authors from these countries, they are a lot, and high quality.

I like the Russians a lot but I have to vote for Dickens because he makes me laugh more.

Polish, English, Russian. One or two Americans too. Somehow, I don't like French.

I like your layout

Sienkiewicz "Trylogia" to cheer up on a bitter day

Boleslaw Prus "Lalka" ("The Doll") at all times.

Dickens - "Nicholas Nickleby" for homemade cake and lemon tea, "Little Dorrit" for the soul.

Jane Austen for time in bed with a bad cold.

Galsworthy to get away from reality.

Chechov for a rainy afternoon. (I'm off Dostoyevski)

Faulkner for a challenge.
