Spanish and Latin American Music

This thread is dedicated to the gathering of the music that is of, or is related to, Latin American and Spanish culture.

Here are two of my favorites. Enjoy.

Suavemente by Elvis Crespo

Esa Muchacha by Los Hermanos Rosario

So very lively!

It's been a long, long time since I heard much, but this is somewhat classic. I think people might enjoy it even if they don't understand the lyrics.

^Here is the basic gist of the lyrics. Much hotter in Spanish. But you can get that from the music. Enjoy. And thanks for sharing. It's been a long time since I've heard this and it brought back some memories. (those are for another time)

Hoy Tengo Ganas De Ti / Today I desire you
Fuiste ave de paso / You were a passing bird
y no se por que razón / and I don't know for what reason
me fuí acostumbrando cada día mas a tí / everyday I became more accustomed to you
Los dos inventamos la aventura del amor / The two of us invented the adventure of love
llenaste mi vida, y después te vi partir / you filled my life, and then I saw you leaving
sin decirme adiós yo te vi partir / without saying goodbye I saw you leave.

Quiero en tus manos abiertas buscar mi camino / In your open arms I want to find my way
y que te sientas mujer solamente conmigo / and I want you to feel like a woman only with me
hoy tengo ganas de ti, hoy tengo ganas de ti. / Today I
desire you, today I desire you
Quiero apagar en tus labios la sed de mi alma / I desire to extinguish in your lips the thirst of my soul
y descubrir el amor juntos cada mañana / and each morning to find love together

hoy tengo ganas de ti, hoy tengo ganas de ti. /
today I desire you, today I desire you

No hay nada mas triste / Nothing is more sad
que el silencio y el dolor / than silence and pain
nada mas amargo que saber que te perdí / nothing is more bitter than to know that I have lost you
Hoy busco en la noche el sonido de tu voz / Today I searched in the night the sound of your voice
y donde te escondes para llenarte de mí / and where are you hiding to be filled with me
llenarme de tí, llenarme de tí. / fill me with you, fill me with you

etc. etc.

I like La Oreja de Van Gogh. We listened to them in Spanish class and I think it's beautiful the music they produce.

Way to go, Pedro!

Here's something more recent with Carlos Santana on stage. Hope you guys like it?

One of my dad's favorites:

I can't translate like Pedro, but the song is for a cruel and beautiful woman. She has lovely eyes but won't let them look his way. She's lovely and bewitching, and he wants her but he's poor, so he understands her rejections.

A couple more classics:

This next one translates nicely:

It's said they came from the south, in a red car
Bringing 100 Kilos of cocaine
On route to Chicago
That's what the snitch said who turned them in
They had already gotten past customs
The one in Paso Texas
But, right in San Antonio the cops were waiting for them
A siren rang, an immigrant yelled that the car should stop
to be searched, and that they should not resist or they'd be killed.
Out came an M16 as the wind roared
The light from a patrol car flew as the combat started
Which saw such a massacre.

You get the idea:

The corrido is the Mexican version of a folksong that often takes a ballad form and tells of an event that may be historical or romantic. Unlike the U.S. form it has some extra musical rules. It is a very old musical form and has taken on a new subject in the past years, namely celebrating drug trafficking. They are called narcocorridos. You can read more about it here: Narcocorridos: Music to Mexican Drug Lords’ Ears | Magazine
