Maria Callas probably does eclipse all others.

I like Renee Fleming:

And Karita Mattila (who has the stronger voice of the three):

It might be kind of unfair to include Opera performers in a singing competition, as theirs are the most perfect, technically speaking, voices, but there is a lot more in singing than technique. So I'll nominate a few more of my favourite female singers.

Edith_piaf Edith_piaf

Padam Padam

Her farewell success, and a summary of a life, in a touching performance. A frail, tormented body, producing this voice:

One of my favourites, Theodorakis' "Omorfi Poli" ("Beautiful City"), adapted in French as "Les Amants de Teruel".

The famous "La Vie en Rose", also sung magnificently by Louis Armstrong.

I grew up hearing Maria Callas at the radio [my grandmother adored her].

I would add Joan Sutherland from Australia

And Monserrat Caballe [same aria] from Spain

When i discover a good female voice it kinda makes my day, as i did with Eva long time ago, i think most of us are familiar with her sweet tones..

In concert with the season, Barbara Bonney singing Ave Maria (Schubert). I have to agree with the youtube poster, she does something with this rendition that makes it breathtakingly beautiful.
