Re: Mediterranean and Balkan musical contest

In the slavic mythology Mori are undead creatures, bad spirits of dead people, people who are dying from non natural causes (suicidal people), but i doubt that in the song it is said about them..

Mori means in the case of this song Mori means mine or beautiful, here it is used in this song also -

I haven't been to Bulgaria......., well I don't live in Greece, but my sister who did go there with her family, was telling me that one of the things that surprised her was that in front of the doors the people were puting the pictures of the dead!
Is that a custom there?

Re: Mediterranean and Balkan musical contest

I have decided it was high time this side of the Mediterranian made some contribution.

This is one of my most favorite songs from the classic Israeli beautiful songs. It brings calm and peace. I hope you enjoy it.

It is called "Almost Evening", music by Sasha Argov, lyrics by Ya'akov Shabtai, sung by the Shlishyat HaMa'apil.

Lyrics translated below:

Among the cypresses the evening is coming down,
Look, the shadow is coming closer to us,
We will walk barefoot in the green fields
Because the day, my beautiful, is passing.

On your shoulder my hand would rest
And my shadow by your shadow walks,
From the sea now the wind is blowing
Because the day, my beautiful, is passing.

Let us sit, everything is peaceful,
Among the trees of the citrus orchard the day is settling down,
On the grape vine leaves the shadow touches,
In the eucaliptus grove already darkness is hiding.

But... the sunset light lights up your face,
Your braid has dropped into my hand,
And black black are your two eyes,
And the day, my beautiful, is passing.

Put your head on my knee,
In your black braid I shall weave a flower,
The birds are singing the road song,
Over the eucaliptus grove already night is gathered.

But... among the cypresses the moon is rising,
Look, so clear is the night,
In the field spans the owl is screaming
And after him the jackal howls.

At last! What kept you so long? I was wondering all this time.
Thanks for stepping in, you are most welcome.

The song you posted is beautiful, especially the lyrics, they are so touching. It's more of a poem than average lyrics. It has a sweet, sensual melancholy to it.

You are right, it is a poem, not written for song, but taken by Sasha Argov (who was a truly splendid song composer and made a huge contribution to the Israeli music). You may guess he was of Russian origin.

It's wonderful that all of you felt the magic of this song, enev though you don't speak the language. I love it from first hearing, which was sometime in early 80s.

Israeli music has a whole section that is generally referred to as "the beautiful songs of the land of Israel". These include classics of all kinds from the first 3-4 decades Israel exists (and before) and includes many poems by renown Jewish and Israeli poets. On Sabbaths and holidays we have on many radio stations hours upon hours of these songs.

Then there is the Mediterranian section, which incorporates the African and Asia-Minor Jews music, which is a lot more like Arabic. Or rather used to be. Now it has much blended into a totally new style. I used be absolutely intolerant to the Mediterranian style in the 80s, it was too much like Arabic music and quite painful to my ears. The Mediterranian Israeli music today includes Greek also, and the Ethiopean Jews (I posted both the Greek and Idan Raichel's project in the other music thread a while ago - if you like I will again ).

There are all kinds of openlly ethnic songs, like Russian, or Yemenite. We have had wonderful Yemenite singers over all the times.

Then there is the Rock and Pop, the Jazz and Blues, and even Rap and Reggay. Some is absolutely not for me, some is lovely.

No, just felt that you were more into Balkans sort of thing. So I'll hop in occasionally, as you seem to find it aggreeable.
