Damn, I was going to note the birth of John Philip Sousa (1854) who gave [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMM0d--ZRyM&feature=fvw"]this to the United States[/ame]. But I guess you did get there first so I'll resort to this being the anniversary of the death of Edgar Varese ( in 1965) [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch0Zytt58NQ&feature=related"]who gave us this[/ame].

And today's premiere is that of Janáček's The Cunning Little Vixen, in Brno, Czech Republic in 1924. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxKcxndDcA4&feature=related"]Here’s a version[/ame] that’s quite funny in its own way!!

1988-John Fogerty won his self-plagiarism court battle with Fantasy Records. The label claimed Fogerty copied his own song, “Run Through The Jungle” when he wrote “The Old Man Down The Road”.

Self-plagiarism?

1991-Frank Zappa was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Because the disease was advanced, it was inoperable, and Zappa died two years later.

re: On this day in MUSIC

Brahms premiered his Piano Concerto No. 2 in 1881. He played the piano part himself which kinda reminds us of the oft-forgotten fact that he was also an accomplished pianist. We can also wonder if Brahms himself was a little on the shy side. At various times he described, firstly, the whole score (which is larger than most piano concertos) as "some little piano pieces" and then the rather emotive and dramatic scherzo as a "little wisp of a scherzo."

For anyone interested in listening to a second piano concerto that doesn't quite achieve the standard of the first, here it is on Youtube:
