Musical Fact:
The pop hit "All By Myself" by Eric Carmen was lifted from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto #2. The verse borrows very heavily from the second movement (Adagio Sostenuto) of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Opus 18, which Carmen believed was in the public domain. Having found it was not, only after the record had been issued, Carmen had to come to an agreement with the Rachmaninoff estate. Early versions, therefore, only give writing credits to Carmen, but later versions also credit Rachmaninoff. Carmen's original version of "All By Myself" has spawned numerous cover versions, by such artists as Céline Dion, Frank Sinatra, and Igudesman & Joo.

Musical Fact:
Over the centuries, not ony has the orchestra grown in size, but also the number of different instruments used in an orchestra has increased. The trombone, as we know it, was first used in Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony (1808). The modern trombone is a descendant of the medieval sackbut. Mozart used it to great effect in his operas “Don Giovanni’ and “The Magic flute’, but it was Beethoven, a generation or so later, who first used it in a symphony. In fact, Beethoven’s 5th and 6th symphonies were both premiered at the same concert, with the 6th being played in the first half and the 5th in the second half. Technically speaking, therefore, Beethoven’s 6th symphony was the first to use a trombone!

re: On this day in MUSIC

Yaay Pedro! You've done a great job in covering the important events in musical history, and today is the anniversary of your Original Post. Since it's beginnings, your entries here have become much more comprehensive, so I'm hoping that you keep it up for at least a while. If you don't, I'm sure I won't be the only one that would miss them, but I certainly would understand. Having been at one time a daily contributor here myself, I know that putting together a post for this thread can take a some effort. There were very few gaps during the past year, though. Congratulations, Maestro!Click the image to open in full size.

re: On this day in MUSIC

Thank you Recusant. Indeed today is a milestone and it has been a year since this thread was started. However, as you pointed out there are a few gaps. Mostly at the beginning. Sometime around December you were doing the lengthy listings, my contributions still rather scant and cursory. Then around March you had to leave to tap a keg or something and were absent for awhile. Following your excellent example I bit the bullet (that's code for bought a bottle of scotch) and picked up the cudgel (I think that’s Spanish for corkscrew) and continued on and will continue on as long as the glass stays full.
Thanks to everyone. Your comments have been my motivation.
