Musical Fact:
When Philip the Good died in 1467, he passed the dukedom to his son,
Charles the Bold (1433–1477). Charles showed all the earmarks of following his
father’s footsteps. He was himself an amateur musician. He not only played the
harp, but composed music. A contemporary wrote of him that he “brought
together the most famous musicians in the world and maintained a Chapel graced
with such harmonious and delectable voices that next to celestial glory, there was
nothing as blissful.”

Musical Fact:
The end of the fourteenth century saw the rise of Jan Hus, a radical religious reformer who has also been described as a “champion of the oppressed people, learned writer, preacher, Master and Rector of Prague University” and a musician himself. His followers, known as Hussites, rose up against the government and religious institutions and used music as a recruitment tool and morale booster. Hus himself was burned at the stake in 1415, a sentence passed during the Council of Constance (1414–1418).
Works such as “Rise, Oh Rise, Thou Great City of Prague” from 1419, and “Children, Let Us Meet Together” kept the Hussite movement going. One work, “Ye Warriors of God,” became legendary as it had the reputation of causing enemies to scatter in fright just from hearing the sound of it coming their way. The Hussite army was defeated in 1434. After that there were still Hussites, but their revolutionary fervor was gone. The rebellion, however, was a blueprint for the later Protestant Reformation movement and also future revolutionary movements.

Musical Fact: (or not)
I recently came across the following on the Internet:
“This classic composition you are listening to now (Beethovens 5th) is something rather unique. The repeated rhythm of “dun dun dun dah” is actually the letter “V” in Morse code. At the time, Beethoven's country, Germany, was at war. Beethoven wanted to communicate victory through this song to show his patriotism.”
Proof that Beethoven was clairvoyent since he died a full ten years before Morse invented his telegraph.

Musical Trivia is brought to you today by Sigaaund Spaeth

“If you want to write a really popular song, one that will fall naturally from the lips of millions, be sure that somewhere in your chorus you assault the English language in no uncertain terms. With even one reasonably atrocious error in English grammar included in your words, you may find yourself with a hit on your hands.
The tradition of bad grammar is of long standing with the lyric-writers of popular music. Their efforts in this direction have been so consistent over a number of years that they have actually succeeded in stabilizing the language in certain details on which the dictionaries and the scholars would never have surrendered.” –from Fifty-Years with Music- (1959)

Speaking of a singular atrocity, how does achy breaky heart grab you?

Musical Fact:
“Der Fuehrer’s Face” (1942), with words and music by Oliver Wallace (1887–1963), was written for a cartoon short, Donald Duck in Nutzi Land. The song proved so popular during World War II that the short was retitled to bear the name of the song.
SPIKE JONES started his career as a musical satirist with this number, the only song to become popular by making fun of Hitler. The recording by Jones and his City Slickers sold over a million and a half discs (Bluebird 11586).
The Germans also suffered musical mayhem during World War I with the popular song, “Let’s bury the hatchet, Let’s bury the hatchet in the Kaisers head.”

Musical Trivia:
The credo of RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS

Eminent 20th-century composer; b. Down Ampney (Gloucester), England, Oct. 12, 1872; d. London, Aug. 26, 1958.
In brief, he held that a musical style must be national before it can become international or ‘‘classic’’; that the greatest music is only ‘‘an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace, rooted in an age-old tradition’’ (The Making of Music).

On 2009 we posted this:

in 1854, American bandmaster and composer John Philip Sousa was born in Washington, DC
in 1860, Polish pianist, composer and statesman Ignacy Jan Paderewski was born in Kurylowka, Poland
in 1893, Russian composer Pyotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky died in a cholera epidemic in St. Petersburg, at the age of 53 (of course we all know the real cause of death. Don't we?) [no one responded with the incident I was thinking of. One more chance.]

Avon added this to the 2009 entry:
Damn, I was going to note the birth of John Philip Sousa (1854) who gave [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMM0d--ZRyM&feature=fvw"]this to the United States[/ame]. But I guess you did get there first so I'll resort to this being the anniversary of the death of Edgar Varese ( in 1965) [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch0Zytt58NQ&feature=related"]who gave us this[/ame].

And today's premiere is that of Janáček's The Cunning Little Vixen, in Brno, Czech Republic in 1924. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxKcxndDcA4&feature=related"]Here’s a version[/ame] that’s quite funny in its own way!!
