Umm ... let's see!

Premiers of Beethoven's Symphony no. 4 in Bb major op. 60, in Vienna in 1807, Mendelssohn's Symphony no. 5 in d minor op. 107 “Reformationssinfonie”, in Berlin, in 1832 (a favourite of mine!!) and The Planets by Gustav Holst in London, in 1920.

All in all, quite a good day for premiers!!

Interesting that you mention Mantovani. I was reading a few months ago that there has been renewed interest in his music in just this last year or two (in Britain, at least) with there being plans to release DVDs and CDs.

I'm not really sure if I'm ready to rush out and buy a copy of [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wX0mb9VqBe8"]Tulips from Amsterdam[/ame]!

Nightmares!!! I liked Hindemith's music many years ago ... until, in my wisdom, I decided to play his Tuba Sonata at a recital concert that I had been coerced into taking part in. The piece itself isn't greatly difficult. Its more 'awkward' than 'difficult'. But buy it and practice it I did. Then, the day before the concert, I was told that all the other performers would be playing without music ... so I really ought to do the same. So for the next 18 hours, I sat with the music and tried to memorize it. I then spent about three hours practicing before the event. Sure, I did it without the music and, if I dare say so, did it well, but the trauma of having to learn such an angular and often musically illogical piece at such short notice kinda put me off anything with Hindemith's name on the cover for a very loooong time.

My contribution:

1974 - Stevie Wonder's Boogie On Reggae Woman was released. Brilliant!!
