I do appreciate the skills of an artist who can portray a sitter as natural and lifelike as possible. A few of the best naturalist portrait artists were: Rogier van der Weyden, Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Antonello da Messina, Giovanni Bellini, Raphael, Holbein, and Titian.

Here is one of my favorites, by Rembrandt, called "Night Watch"

Another, "School of Athens", for no other reason than it's symbolism and the subject matter

And yet another, this one from the Bayeux Tapestry, in which Harold Godwinson swears his loyalty to William the Conqueror (i know it's not a painting, but I couldn't resist)

And for my final one, I present Thomas Cole's The Voyage of Life, Old Age, which has a special "punch", and symbolism in it

Was going to offer several paintings by Albrecht Dürer and Auguste Renoir but was obviously distracted. The "Face Off" painting is spectacular.
