hahahaha, the thread is very interesting.

they used 雅言(ya yan),

雅言 was the oldese common Speech, the position just like mandarin today.

the language basic is the capital language of zhou dynasty. (position is near west-north of xi'an city today)
Confucius teach all students who come from everywhere, he tech with 雅言(ya yan).

here is record:

子所雅言,《诗》《书》、执礼,皆雅言也。(writen in 《论语》)

雅言(ya yan) is the official language of zhou dynasty, and qin dynasty have the same capital near xi'an city, i think qin dynasty use same language too.

Ah, 雅言(ya yan) Originated from ancient xi'an area, and qin shihuang moved a lot of people and soldier families to south of china, then bring these language to southern, and history changed, local southern language disappeared, 雅言(ya yan) became main language.

common historians think that present cantonese originated from 雅言(ya yan)of qin dynasty and han dynasty, and some pronunciation syllables are near to ancient 雅言(ya yan) too.
