This long article fro 1987 give us some in-site on why the Philippines did not go the way of Korea.

Article - A Damaged Culture: A New Philippines? - James Fallows - The Atlantic

A quote from that above article -

Quote:
The countries that have most successfully rebuilt their economies, including Japan and Korea, went through extremely protectionist infant-industry phases, with America's blessing; the United States never permitted the Philippines such a period. The Japanese and Koreans now believe they can take on anybody; the confidence of Filipino industrialists seems to have been permanently destroyed.

Then lets not forget the Dodds Report. Its purpose was to set aside the Philippines has a resource supplier for industrialized Japan. In other words. the Philippines was not to be industrialized.

This will take you to that report. Scroll down to where is says the Dodds Report.

Mainly because in the beginning all of the aformentioned profitable nations around the world got shut down financial systems as well as utilized protectionist steps and keep the sunrise marketplace safe through intercontinental rivalry.

it is simple. it is because of education.
at the time, Japan made so many technology schools and universities there

Japan punished a parents if they made a child not to go to school

The Thais did pretty well economically speaking.

Japan, Taiwan, and S Korea were US allies (thus the US aided them with technology transfers and easy access to American markets). Also they were open to trade with the outside Capitalist world whereas other countries weren't (being communist and all).

There was also some good land reform (enabling people to build up some capital individually and keeping them occupied).

Indonesia never did as well due to being pro-Soviet at times and having Civil Wars at others.

it's because of the country stability.
korea, japan, taiwan, hongkong, singapore, these countries have only one nation, one race, one religion, one history. in the last 50 years, these countries are very stable politically, economically.
looking at philipine, thailand, malysia,..., these countries contains several races, several religions, several histories. there are always unrest events, even today.

Singapore has a substantial amount of Indians and Malaysians, but they have been a very stable country. I always thought it was the Confucian work ethic and emphasis on education which guided aforementioned countries to stability and success

The Philippines lags behind it's SE Asian neighbors, because of Chronic corruption. A lot of skilled workers and professionals left the country due to lack of opportunity .. ...Singapore and Malaysia. .did a great job in significantly reducing or totally ridding their government of corruption . They punished and jailed corrupt officials . The Marcos regime is the major factor in the Philippines' decline. Marcos' dictatorship ,unlike Malaysia's and Singapore's was mainly for his and cronies benefits.. The Catholic church's ultra conservative views , messing with local politics . .is one catalyst in the country's nose dive into poverty and misery .Voter ignorance is another. Majority of it's voting population elect on the basis of good looks and popularity ( Seen to many Hollywood movies). Thus incompetent, imbecile, and corrupt officials take the seats.

None of these conditions stopped Chinese coolies from working their asses off, saving money, and founding successful enterprises despite racist pogroms, Communist "purges" facilitated by America, cultural suppression, theft, murder, ransom, robbery and other vile behavior from jealous, historically illiterate backstabbers.
