One of the matriarchs (mother of the antagonists-Kauravas) of Mahabharata was called Gandhari as she hailed from that region. Also Pandu's second wife who committed Sati was called Madri as she of the Madra tribe of northern Punjab.

In Ramayana, one of the villains was Dasaratha's wife Kaikeyi(of Kaikeya tribe of Western Kashmir) who forced Rama to go into exile.

For some reason the northwest region start getting bad PR in the Epics !

A bit info on the relationship between ancient Paktia and Gandhara:

The existing Paktia Province or the ancient Paikipika is located in the Southeast of Afghanistan. In the North it connected to Gandahara Province (Peshawar Province to Kabul), in the South it joins the Arabian Sea, and to the East it is connected to Indus River, to the West it is joined to the Province of Baluchistan and Zabulistan (Kandahar).

Whether it has been the Achaemenids, Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, the British, or the Americans, NATO, and the Europeans, none of them has been able to enter the Capital of the Pashtoon Empire, Paktia. Its present famous Town and Cities are:
(1) Gardez (2) Khost (3) Orghoon (4) Tahl (5) Wanna (6) Kurm Fortress (7) Ghazi Khan Deira (8) Ismael Khan Deira (9) Shikaarpoor (10) Tahtaha Jacobabad (11) Sialkot (12) Karachi (13) Banu (14) Damaan (15) Galaachi (16) Jaampoor (17) Kashmoon (18) Gandagoat (19) Ghauspoor (20) Noorpoor (21) Yaqoobabad (22) Etc.

Karachi Seaport that has now occupied the ancient Sea Port of Paktia on the Shores of the Arabian Sea was regarded one of the Main Sea Gates to Central Asia that has kept her Position until now. Suleiman Mountain Ranges pass through the Centre of Paktia from the North to the South. It is regarded as one of the most gigantic Mountains of Afghanistan.

Famous Rivers of Paktia are: (1) Kabul (2) Kurm (3) Tochi (4) Gomal The above first River separates Paktia from Gandahara. The Valleys of these Four Rivers are also used for the Highways such Kandahar to Quetta Highway to the South, and the Passageway of Khyber in the North connecting Western Areas of Paktia to the Eastern Areas of Paktia.

Paktia or Pikipika:

According to Herodotus, the Inhabitants Pikipika lived along the Shores of Indus River that was distributed in Four Districts and was governed by a United Government.

(a) All the Regions of Suleiman Mountain Ranges and Safeed Koh that from the North joined the Sources of Swat Rivers, Panjkora, and Doma Mountain Ranges.

(b) From the South, it included the Southern Shores of Logar-Kabul Rivers extending to Jalalabad.

(c) In the East, it included the Regions to Indus River.

(d) In the West, it included in Regions to Helmand River.

(e) Southern Border was and is the Region of Kakar paralleling to the Regions of Pishin, Shal, Bori Valley reaching Indus River.

(f) The Province of Zabul (Kandahar) was also within the Boundaries of ancient Pakhtia.

Mr. Billo further clarifies the Boundaries of Pakhtia more precisely in Natural Afghanistan and writes: “When we look at the Ancient Geography of this Country that the Persians call her {Ariawarta} and the Greeks call her {Ariana}, that was later called {Khurasan}, and now it is called {Afghanistan}, its Main Possessions and ancient Location Divisions are known and clarified as the following:

The opponents of Bharatas in Dasharajana(Battle of the ten Kings) resembles many Iranic names. The Battle was fought on the banks of Ravi river in Punjab. So, it quite possible Paktha could be the ancestral tribe of Pakhtuns as many historians believe.

How does Kaikeya tribe become bad because of Kaikeyi? Did the entire Kuru clan become infamous because of Duryodhana? Moreover, Ashvapati the father of Kaikeyi is highly hailed for being a strong adherent to Dharma.

And how did Gandhara become bad in epics?

So I guess Gandhara may have been Pashtun land at the time or those Pactyan Gandharis were Pashtunized Gandharis.

Hindkowan and Punjabis are Gandharis

There has been some identity crisis among pashtuns they want to occupy the history the way they occupied ancient Gandharis land. The ancient Gandharis were Indic people and who spoke Indo Aryan languages. The cities of ancient Gandhara were named in Sanskrit language like purushpur(Peshawar)or takhshila(taxila) not in Iranian languages which is spoken by pashtuns. The pashtuns are occupiers of Gandhari lands .The history of pashtun begins when Islamic conqueror Mahmud ghazni invaded Gandhari lands and pushed large hindkowans into inner lands from frontier .There is not a single ancient Gandhara cities with Iranian name everything was written in Indic language. The real Gandharis were pushed out from there villages into urban area by these fanatic Iranian pashtuns and till now when you go to old area of Peshawar like kissa kahani bazaar you will not see a single pashtun inhabiting there .The old Peshawar is still inhabited by Gandharis(hindkowans/Punjabi) and Punjab centric party PML-N wins its seat each and every election. The pashtun occupiers mainly live in new areas of Peshawar not old areas.
And finally the Bukhara and Samarkand will not become Turkish cities since it has been occupied by Turkish people now it will always remain Persian cities.
Similarly Peshawar(purushpur) and charsadda(Pushkalavati) will not become pashtun cities since it has been occupied by pashtun people now it will always remain hindkowan /Punjabi /indic cities
